Volunteering as a retreat team member. The weekend runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. To prepare for the retreat meetings are held both inside and outside of the prison. Both Catholic men and women participate as full team members. Each weekend retreat also requires a music minister and a spiritual director, usually a deacon. We also try to have an ex inmate who has been out a minimum of one year to participate on each team.
Participating in the Hootenanny. The Hootenanny begins around 4:00pm Saturday and usually ends before 9:00pm. Depending on the facility, there may be a meal with the residents and there is always singing and witnessing. If you have musical talent or just want to see what the REC experience is about, please consider attending one or more Hootenannies.
Performing Palanca and writing palanca letters. Palanca is the act of praying and performing sacrifices for the residents, and writing Palanca Letters, which are given to the residents. Letters start with "Dear Brother in Christ." No identifying information is allowed in the letters. At least 60 letters are needed for each weekend retreat so that each resident receives one. - Both English and Spanish are needed. We encourage this as a possible service activity for schools. We would be more than happy to provide a presentation on the REC ministry for schools wishing to participate.
Supporting the REC program with a monetary donation.
